Apple Mac users affected by virus

Are Mac users no longer as safe as they think? A number of articles surfaced on the net today about a virus targeted at Apple Macs.

The 'Mac Flashback' trojan installs itself by either using one of two Java vulnerabilities, or via a social engineering trick that gets the user to install it.

The exploit saves an executable file onto the hard drive of the infected Mac and then goes on to harvest sensitive information including passwords. "The file is used to download malicious payload from a remote server and to launch it." said Doctor Web, the Russian antivirus firm.

So far, 600,000 users have been affected worldwide, with about 68,000 located in the UK.

Mac users are advised to download and install a security update from Apple's website.
